The Report: facts and sourcing
The U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday gave California officials 48 hours to review a list of alleged noncitizen voters or face legal action, Reuters reported, citing a letter it reviewed.
The administration has repeatedly said noncitizen voting is widespread, though multiple studies have found it to be rare. Reuters reports the department has sued 30 states that refused to turn over voter rolls and has lost 26 of those cases without a win so far. Prosecutors announced 16 new criminal cases against noncitizens on Monday.
California's House races could help decide control of Congress after voters there approved a new congressional map.
