The Report: facts and sourcing

Investigators found most of the Learjet 60's left elevator, part of the tail that controls pitch, broken into three pieces scattered about 1.3 to 3.8 miles from the crash site, National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman said Tuesday, the Miami Herald reported. The jet, flying from Austin, Texas, to Eleuthera in the Bahamas, crashed Sunday near Greenacres in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing all nine people aboard.

The crew reported light ice and moderate turbulence at 12:47 p.m. with an outside temperature of minus 53 degrees Fahrenheit, Chapman said; the jet crashed shortly before 1 p.m. in a residential neighborhood. A convective SIGMET warning of thunderstorms was in effect at the time, according to Aviation Weather Center data cited by the Herald. As the plane descended, a man believed to be the pilot could be heard reciting the Lord's Prayer on air traffic control audio, the Herald reported.

No one on the ground was killed, but dozens of residents had to leave their homes. The NTSB says weather is a major focus, and the AP reported a final determination will likely take more than a year. No cause has been determined.
