A child in Lewis County, New York, has died in connection with the ongoing measles outbreak, the state Department of Health and Lewis County Public Health said in a joint statement Monday. It is the first known measles-associated death in the state in more than 30 years. Officials asked that the family's privacy be respected.
The state said there had been 178 cases this year as of Oct. 24, 170 outside New York City and eight in the city. The death comes four weeks after Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a State Disaster Emergency over the outbreak across areas of New York and neighboring states.
In Pennsylvania, measles cases reached 1,433 as of Monday, up seven from the previous update, as the state battles its worst outbreak in years, Reuters reported. New York health officials urged residents to make sure they are up to date on MMR vaccinations.
