Russian attacks on nine regions of Ukraine caused emergency power outages for hundreds of thousands of households and wounded at least 15 people, officials said Friday, Euronews and the Associated Press reported. Strikes hit Odesa among other regions and set off large factory fires there and in Zaporizhzhia. Russia's bombing of the power grid before winter has been a feature of every year of the war.
On Thursday, Ukraine abandoned a brief truce on energy targets that it said Moscow ignored despite President Trump's call for a ceasefire, and it struck a Russian oil refinery. Trump called Ukraine's renewed refinery strikes "a disgrace" and said Zelenskyy is "not a good guy for us to deal with," PBS NewsHour reported. At a European Union summit in Brussels, Zelenskyy answered: "Yesterday was 1,000 drones in Ukraine, 1,000. But the American side said that it is difficult to speak with Zelenskyy. It's less difficult to manage with Putin."
The UN human rights office in Kyiv said at least 328 civilians were killed and 2,105 wounded in September, 85% more than in September last year. "The first two weeks of October were among the deadliest periods for civilians in years," said Danielle Bell, head of the UN office. "We don't see now signals from the Russian side that they are ready for this, to end this war," Zelenskyy told reporters. "That's why we have to prepare for the winter."
