Shawn Oliver, the Republican nominee for Massachusetts lieutenant governor, has suspended his campaign after being arrested on a charge of operating under the influence, WBUR reported Monday. The arrest followed a crash around 11:40 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, on Dartmouth Street in New Bedford, in which his vehicle overturned and five parked vehicles were involved, according to The New Bedford Light.
Oliver was charged with OUI liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation and speeding, and was scheduled to be arraigned Monday. He is presumed innocent.
Oliver was the running mate in the Nov. 3 election against Democratic Gov. Maura Healey and Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll. Massachusetts Republican Party leaders, including state party chair Amy Carnevale, issued statements on the arrest, WBUR reported.
