The Report: facts and sourcing

Katie Zacharia is out as White House press secretary after five days on the job, NBC News reported Friday, citing two senior administration officials, an administration official and a source familiar with the decision. A senior administration official said she is moving to a new role that will be announced later. Earlier Friday, President Trump said he had told her, "Katie, you know, you don't have to do this if you don't want," and, as quoted by PBS NewsHour, "Maybe it's not for her."

Zacharia, a conservative commentator who had been a senior communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group, held her only briefing Tuesday. It lasted less than 15 minutes, and she took only a few questions, NBC reported. A senior administration official confirmed Thursday that she did not pass the California bar exam, which The Wall Street Journal first reported. She graduated from Pepperdine Law and has said she practiced law in China. The nonpartisan watchdog Campaign for Accountability filed a complaint with the State Bar of California asking it to investigate whether she broke the law by calling herself a lawyer.

In a statement Friday evening, Zacharia said "it was an honor to work for him." She had succeeded Karoline Leavitt, who left at the end of August. Her tenure was shorter than Anthony Scaramucci's 11 days as communications director in Trump's first term. Two sources told NBC News it is highly unlikely Trump will name a new press secretary any time soon, with the midterm elections less than three weeks away.
