Colombia inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday at a ceremony attended by Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula Escobar and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, according to Israel's Foreign Ministry and Colombia's foreign ministry. The opening follows the formal restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries in August.
Sa'ar said it was the tenth embassy to open in Jerusalem, up from five when he took office less than two years ago. He said President Abelardo de la Espriella had told him before his election that he would move Colombia's embassy to Jerusalem, "and he kept it."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking at a reception that evening, called the tenth embassy "the minyan" and praised Colombia's "courage and faith." Colombia's foreign ministry said Ambassador Tania Gilinski will lead the mission, with cooperation planned in security, investment and technology.
