The U.S. Senate race in Texas between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton is "essentially tied" and now comes down to turnout, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll released Sunday. The survey of 1,492 registered Texas voters was conducted Oct. 8 to 16 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 points among likely voters. Other recent polls have shown Talarico narrowly ahead: Marist had him up 47% to 45% and Siena 48% to 44%.
The cost of living is the top issue for Texas voters, CBS found, and Talarico has a sizable lead among those who say higher prices have hurt them. More voters said Talarico has the right character to serve. He also draws 5% of self-identified Republicans and most Latino voters, a group that swung toward Trump in 2024. Paxton benefits from the state's Republican lean and from stronger support in Texas for the administration's deportation program, and many of his backers said they are voting to support Trump.
Sen. Ted Cruz, who is not on the ballot, has been campaigning to help Paxton across the finish line, The Washington Post reported. In the governor's race, the poll found incumbent Republican Greg Abbott with an edge over Democrat Gina Hinojosa. Election Day is Nov. 3.
