Seventy-one percent of U.S. adults say the country is on the "wrong track," the highest share of President Donald Trump's second term, according to an NBC News Decision Desk Poll powered by SurveyMonkey released Sunday. For the first time in his second term, the share saying "right track" fell into the 20s. Trump's approval rating dropped to 34%, a second-term low in the poll, and 51% said they strongly disapprove. Among registered voters his approval was 39%, and registered voters preferred Democrats to control Congress by 55% to 45%.

The economy was the top issue at 31%. Forty-four percent said their finances are worse than a year ago, and 67% called gas prices a serious problem. Trump's approval was 27% on the cost of living, 29% on the war with Iran and 43% on border security and immigration, his best issue. Only 14% said they expect to receive the $5,000 payment Trump has promised if Republicans keep Congress.

Neither party fared well. Forty-three percent viewed the Democratic Party favorably and 37% the Republican Party. Fifty-two percent said Trump's administration is more corrupt than previous ones, and 56% said corruption is equally bad in both parties. The poll surveyed 19,135 adults online from Sept. 28 to Oct. 12 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points. The midterm elections are Nov. 3.
