The Report: facts and sourcing

At least seven people were killed and dozens injured in an explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday, Global News reported, citing multiple military sources. The sources said a live-fire training exercise hit a gas line or gas well on the base around 4 p.m. local time. The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed fatalities and injuries but said it would not confirm numbers until next of kin are notified. "I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory," Defence Minister David McGuinty said, calling it "a very, very active and delicate situation."

Fuelled by gusts of up to 100 km/h, the fire spread beyond the training area and crossed the base fence, Global News reported. Several Alberta hospitals declared a Code Orange for mass casualties, ambulances from across the province were sent to the base, and STARS air ambulance crews flew from Edmonton and Saskatoon. A source on scene said troops loaded the injured and went back into the field to collect more of their comrades. By around midnight, local officials said the fire was being held.

CFB Wainwright is one of Canada's busiest training bases. Prime Minister Mark Carney said his thoughts were with "all the brave women and men affected," and Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan said the military's priority is the welfare of its members and their families. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre asked Canadians to "pray for Wainwright." The fire also closed an advance polling station ahead of Monday's Alberta referendum.
