A pickup truck drove onto a field during a youth soccer game at the Stryker Sports Complex in east Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, police said. Both were from McPherson, Kansas, and were not related, Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said. Sedgwick County 911 received multiple calls around 3:25 p.m. CT, ABC News reported.
Eleven other people were taken to hospitals, KWCH reported, including five children ages 5 to 9 and adults ages 28 to 68. Ten had traumatic injuries ranging from bruises to what Moses called "extremely severe injuries." A witness told KWCH the black pickup came "plowing through the youth soccer fields" and stopped 100 to 200 yards down the field, where bystanders were already giving CPR and first aid when officers arrived.
The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, stayed with the truck, is in custody and "has been cooperative," Moses said. Two girls were inside the truck with her. Police said they did not know whether the crash was intentional. "We know what happened, but now we're working very hard to find out why it happened, and we're not there yet," Police Chief Joe Sullivan said. "Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita," Mayor Lily Wu said. The city canceled all events at the complex until further notice.
