The Report: facts and sourcing

Canada's farmland produced a record 109.3 million tonnes of field crops (grains, oilseeds and pulses) in 2025, 11% more than the year before, Statistics Canada reported on Nov. 2 in a release from its Census of Environment program. Saskatchewan (42.7 million tonnes), Alberta (28.4 million) and Manitoba (15.7 million) each set records. Agricultural ecosystems supplied 146.6 million tonnes of biomass in all, including hay, vegetables, fruit and honey.

The sea told a different story. Sea fisheries landings fell for a fifth consecutive year in 2024, to 613,000 tonnes, the lowest level since 2002, the agency said. Landings hit their lowest levels since 2002 in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec.

Forests supplied 118.4 million tonnes of timber in 2024, 46% of the biomass harvested commercially from Canada's ecosystems, down from more than 70% in 2002. British Columbia's harvest has fallen by around half since 2002. Maple syrup production reached 113,500 tonnes in 2025.

Statistics Canada also estimated that wild pollinators, such as bumblebees and mining bees, account for 2.4% to 3.1% of the country's harvested crop biomass each year from 2016 to 2024. The estimates cover commercial harvesting only, excluding subsistence, recreational and Indigenous food, social and ceremonial harvesting.
