Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday's midterm elections, the Associated Press reported, in what it called a decisive rebuke of Republican governance. Democrats flipped at least seven Senate seats, in Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina, and more than two dozen House districts, some of which President Donald Trump carried by double digits in 2024.
As of 1:30 a.m. Eastern, Ballotpedia counted at least a 231-141 Democratic majority in the House and a 54-44 majority in the Senate, with races still being counted. Ballotpedia said it is the first time since 1954 that the party that won the Senate in the previous even year lost it in the next cycle. Kansas elected a Democratic senator, Adam Hamilton, for the first time since 1932, and James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton in Texas. Fourteen House Republicans and no House Democrats lost re-election, Ballotpedia said.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries declared victory, UPI reported. Trump told Fox News he was surprised but that Democrats "did a good job," said he was willing to work with them, and predicted he would veto "things that are insane." He acknowledged the Iran war had been a factor in the result. The new Congress will be sworn in Jan. 3.
The AP Voter Poll found roughly three-quarters of voters felt "angry" or "dissatisfied" with the direction of the country, and most blamed the Trump administration for high costs, the AP reported. With the Senate, Democrats will be able to block Trump's nominees to Cabinet posts and federal judgeships.
