The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in Africa has reached 5,376, according to Africa CDC data from Monday reported by Al Jazeera: 5,372 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and two each in Kenya and Uganda. About 10,444 people have been infected.
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which has a death rate above 50% and no approved treatments or vaccines. Clinical trials have begun in recent weeks with the Ervebo vaccine, which works against the more common Zaire strain. Congo declared the outbreak, its 17th and largest, in mid-May.
Uganda was declared Ebola-free in August after 20 cases, Kenya recorded its first-ever cases in October, and Nigeria has reported one imported case with no deaths, Al Jazeera reported.
