Justice Department Asks Judge Who Rebuked It Over 169 Felled Trees to Step Aside

The Trump administration has asked for the removal of U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes from a lawsuit over President Donald Trump's plan to overhaul the East Potomac Golf Course in Washington, CNN reported. In a motion filed Friday, a Justice Department lawyer wrote that Reyes's "behavior in this case is nothing short of egregious" and that her conduct "rises to the level of deep-seated and unequivocal antipathy toward the Trump Administration."

At a hearing Monday, Reyes, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, said she was "furious" that the administration had cut down 169 trees at the public course without first notifying the court and said "the government can't be trusted," CNN reported. Federal officials have said in a court filing that nearly 730 trees will need to be cleared and described the work as routine maintenance to remove hazards. The motion also objected to the judge requiring high-level officials to attend the hearing and cited her comments in other cases, including a ruling blocking the ban on transgender service members.

The lawsuit was brought by a preservation group and two local golfers who oppose Trump's plan to turn the public course into a championship-caliber course. It is one of several construction projects Trump has launched to reshape Washington's landscape since returning to the White House.
