A Lebanese military delegation will present Beirut's demands for an end to Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon at a three-way meeting with Israel and the United States in Tampa, Florida, on Oct. 20, the Lebanese presidency said Saturday, according to Reuters. President Joseph Aoun told visiting French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot that Israel continues to strike southern towns, demolish homes and keep farmers from their land, and that it had not complied with the U.S.-brokered framework agreement, L'Orient Today reported.
The talks will be held Oct. 20 to 22 at U.S. Central Command headquarters and will be limited to military and security matters, JFeed reported, citing an American source quoted by Al-Hadath and i24NEWS. Items on the agenda include pilot zones in southern Lebanon, the deployment of the Lebanese army and a mechanism to verify that Hezbollah weapons and installations have been removed, including who carries out those checks. Under the framework, Israeli withdrawals proceed in phases as that verification happens.
A new war between Israel and Hezbollah broke out March 2. Hezbollah has refused to disarm while Israeli forces remain in Lebanon, Reuters reported. The Israeli military said Wednesday that troops found a ready-to-detonate Hezbollah explosive device and weapons near Kfarchouba. Aoun also asked France to help keep an international presence in the south after the U.N. peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, withdraws in 2027.
