The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen's Houthis said Saturday that it intercepted and destroyed four drones over Riyadh, the Eastern Province and southern Saudi Arabia, Al Jazeera reported. It was the latest in a wave of Houthi attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities. Riyadh's King Khalid airport has come under at least 20 attacks since fighting between the Houthis and Yemen's Saudi-backed government flared in July, including one last week that killed 13 people. On Thursday, at least five people were killed in missile strikes near the presidential palace in Aden.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said Saturday he was willing to "carry out any measure to protect" Saudi Arabia if the kingdom asked. "I'm not talking about fighting anyone or attacking anyone. We are speaking only about defence," he said. Egypt's parliament was called into an emergency session Sunday at his request. Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of encouraging the Houthis, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran supports a "comprehensive political process" to end the conflict.
Several embassies in Saudi Arabia have restricted travel and warned citizens not to use airports, and Saudi schools in Riyadh and nearby Diriyah extended remote learning. Saudi Arabia is backing a Yemeni government counteroffensive and has carried out airstrikes on the Houthis, including on an oil facility in Sanaa.
